NURS 4020 Social Justice and Advocacy in Nursing
Paper Assignment
Thinking critically and writing clearly are essential requirements of the role of the professional nurse. This assignment builds upon the skills mastered in NURS 3500 Role Transition to Baccalaureate Nursing and NURS 3710 Evidence Based Practice in Nursing courses.
The objective of this assignment is for the student to be able to accurately summarize an article in the nursing or related literature which discusses a social injustice/health disparity of a vulnerable population, and to discuss ways to advocate for the improvement of this social injustice/health disparity.
The grade for this assignment will comprise 25% of the course grade.
Method:
1. Choose one of the articles listed at the end of this assignment. Each of these articles relate to a vulnerable population, a health disparity, and a social injustice.
2. Read the article.
3. Write the paper, using the following sections:
a. Introduction
Introduce the reader to the vulnerable population addressed in the article. Identify the health disparity/social injustice identified in the article, and how it is related to the social determinants.
b. Summary of the article
Summarize the article in your own words. Include the key points identified by the author, and how it relates to a health disparity. If the article is a research article, be sure to include the sample size, methods, results, etc. in your summary. All direct quotes (if included) must be cited using APA format.
c. Discussion of nursing implications
Discuss why it this topic is important to nursing. Include how health equity can be achieved regarding this health disparity/ social injustice. Describe specifically how nurses can advocate on an individual, institutional and policy level, (as defined in your textbook) to address this issue.
d. Conclusion
Summarize the key points raised in the article and how nurses can address the injustice through advocacy and other efforts.
