Overview
Learning Objectives:
1. Select a model that can be used to guide evaluation and implementation of EBP, CPGs.
2. Discuss the advantages of using a model to guide EBP implementation.
3. Discuss how the model can also facilitate evaluation of EBP and patient outcomes.
About Week 8
Welcome to the second unit, “theoretical models for EBP implementation and science.” Building on what you have already studied, appraisals, levels of evidence, and CPGs, you will now learn to use models to guide the implementation and evaluation of EBP and CPGs. We now ask the question: How does an individual or group then determine to apply EBP and CPG in the real clinical world using a theoretical model or framework?
Frameworks and Theories
You may remember from your theory course that frameworks can be used to organize thinking about a condition, phenomena or healthcare challenge to inform action. Think of a framework as a map or the framed structure of a house. A framework sets the boundaries for structure, organizes and may specify function but lacks the details (like furniture, appliances, etc) that customize it to its user (or applies it to a specific clinical problem).
In the same way, you can use a model or framework to organize your thinking about a phenomenon and plan for an implementation. You may have learned in informatics that the approach to implementation often would determine the level of acceptance and users’ beliefs about of the Electronic Health Record. What you may not know is that there is a whole field of science focused on supporting behavior change around practice to speed implementation, an active, intentional process. So, this week we will together mostly into reading about models and frameworks for practice.
Application of a model or framework requires some thought. Here are some strategies:
1. Search for literature where authors describe the use of the model. Take note of how they defined each model element and applied it to their project. If there are several papers, perform a comparison of methods and definitions.
2. Pull out the elements of the model and construct .
3. I highly recommend constructing a diagram, illustrating each element and relationships in the model. This will assist you in seeing the application of the model in your DNP project.
4. Consider the environment where this model would be implemented, do the relationships in the model make sense?
5. From the model, how will patient outcomes be measured and evaluated?

Assignments
This paper is due March 16th, uploaded by 11:59 pm AZ time to the Assignments. Be sure to use an implementation science or evidence-based practice framework for this paper and try to focus on a practice that evidence supports is ready to move into practice. This may require pulling up from your specific DNP project PICO and broadening your view. For the paper:
Guidelines
Please use APA (7th ed.) for paper formatting and referencing and write to the highest standards of academic integrity. Turnitin will be used to check for plagiarism. For this assignment, you are expected to write a 10 page (maximum) paper in which you will:
1. Identify a clinical problem in PICO format,
2. Describe the background and significance of the problem,
3. Propose a solution (practice change or intervention),
4. Select an EBP model (also can be referred to as a theory or framework) to direct your solution to the clinical problem and describe the model in depth,
5. Apply the model to your clinical problem solution (and depict using a figure), and
6. Conclude with implications for your future practice

Additional Resources
This video includes three of the great nurse scientists who have contributed to the evidence-based practice movement in nursing: Dr. Marita Titler (developer of both the Iowa model and the Translating Research into Practice model), Dr. Kathleen Stevens (ACE Star model) and Dr. Robin Newhouse (Johns Hopkins model). In this video nurse scientists describe their implementation projects.
