Respiratory Paper
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
Formatting:
The student will use APA format to prepare a written paper (minimum of three pages, maximum 4 pages, excluding title page and reference page) related to the respiratory system. An abstract should not be included.
A reference list of all resources used to complete the assignment must be included at the end of the paper in APA format. The Respiratory paper requires a minimum of two current and legit references within the last five years.
Write in the third person.
RESPIRATORY PAPER GUIDELINES
The following areas are to be addressed in the formal respiratory case presentation paper.
Refer to the patient by initials only (J.S).
Introduction/Disease presentation:
• Identify the respiratory pathology that the patient has developed/acquired.
• Describe relevant normal Pulmonary anatomy and physiology.
• Discuss the impact/alteration of the disease process on relevant pulmonary anatomy and physiology
History and Physical/Chief Complaint:
• What brought the client to the hospital?
• What past medical/surgical history contributed to the situation/admission?
• What family history or genetics may have a role in this condition?
• Are there any lifestyle factors that contribute or increase the pulmonary risk for the client
Pharmacology/Oxygen/Treatment:
• Discuss the role of the client medication profile.
• How do medications work together to manage the client’s condition?
• Do any medications create potential for other complications, conditions or co-morbidities?
• Does the condition require supplemental oxygen or other home medical equipment (i.e. nebulizers, bi-pap, oxygen delivery devices, suction etc.)?
• Discuss any related therapies for the condition. (i.e. Incentive spirometry, percussive therapy, pulmonary rehabilitation etc.)
Lifestyle/Quality of life:
• Discuss any impact the condition may have on the client’s baseline functioning. Include strategies to help incorporate and
habituate to any changes.
• Does this condition create the need for the patient to increase or decrease their current activity/exercise to optimize oxygenation and pulmonary function?
• Are there any physical, environmental or social situations that pose a risk to the client’s condition that should be modified or avoided?
• Are there any isolation issues related to the client’s condition? (for the client or client’s family)
• Discuss the nursing role in educating the client and family in addressing medication management, patient care, lifestyle changes and functional adaptations.
• How does nursing involvement in the client’s care impact his/her experience?
Conclusion:
• Summarizes the clinical course for the client
• Consolidates the clinical scenario, treatment, and coordination of care for the client
Format:
• Grammatical and/or spelling errors are evaluated utilizing the grading rubric
• APA format is graded for accuracy
• An abstract is not required/included in this paper.
• Minimum of 3 pages and maximum of 4 pages, excluding title & reference page.
• 2 scholarly resources (journal articles written by professionals who are experts in their fields), including 1 which is a peer-reviewed journal article (publication, article that goes through a rigorous assessment that involves review and approval by the author’s peers, experts in the same subject area).
