The steps involved in data collection include determining the appropriate data collection tools and techniques guided by the research question. The efficacy of any research depends on the accuracy of the data collected. To avoid unethical studies and poor outcomes, research studies must be well-planned based on extensive knowledge of the literature. Therefore, formulating the research question is crucial for research studies and lays the foundation for a successful study, including accurate data collection and analysis (Barroga & Matanguihan, 2022). Data analytics is valuable in informing decisions in healthcare. Concerns for data collection and quantitative analysis are related to the need to control for variables to limit biases in study results, as clinical decisions are made based on these results. Data collection quality should improve the results’ quality and validity and can lead to reliable data output (Kwok et al., 2022).
Data collection in research can be expensive and time-consuming. Approvals must be obtained from institutional review boards (IRB), governing bodies, and ethical committees. In addition, the cost of conducting the research can affect the data collection process. The time required for the study to take place and data storage can add to the operating costs of the study. This creates potential barriers to data collection as all proper guidelines and protocols must be followed. The data collected must be reliable, accurate, and easily analyzed. The validity of a variable during data collection is also vital as it can affect the outcome of the study. The researcher must know precisely how much data is needed and collected and that the data collection process may vary at different sites (Kwok et al., 2022).
Potential problems I may encounter during the development and implementation of the Doctor of Nursing practice (DNP) project include the ability to access the electronic health record (EHR) to collect patient information such as demographics, list of patient medications to determine the number of patients with polypharmacy and prior medication reconciliation process. Accessing the EHR to collect the data needed for the pilot study may be time-consuming and challenging. In addition, staffing issues may impact the number of nurses present during the medication review training sessions. Furthermore, time constraints due to nurses’ workflow can affect the ability to implement the new process of medication review using the STOPP (Screening Tool of Older Persons’ Prescriptions) and Screening tool to Alert to Right Treatment (START) criteria.
