Healthcare reforms are one of the most important issues for voters. With our aging population, the complexity of the disease, and the rising cost of health care, the government needs a new approach to health care system delivery. There is still a large population that does not have insurance. It is increasingly recognized that our country’s health system is heavily influenced by social determinants, socioeconomic status, and the environment(Green,2018). The healthcare system must change to improve our nation’s health and take firm action to address the unsustainable growth of healthcare costs in the United States. We still have a long way to go before our healthcare system is effective. An uninsured population still has difficulty accessing their health or whose needs are not met within the health system. It invests in prevention and wellness and increases access to primary care physicians. Here are four key reasons we need healthcare reform. We must address adverse healthcare industry practices. • Stop discriminatory health insurance. It will also prevent insurance companies from charging people more because of these conditions and prevent them from canceling their coverage when they get sick. • Require more transparency and accountability. Make insurance companies more accountable by requiring federal oversight of premium increases and public disclosure of the amounts they spend on administrative expenses. • Eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse. Control waste, fraud, and abuse by imposing strict new requirements to identify high-risk providers that have defrauded U.S. taxpayers and identify where there are conflicts of interest. Provide better health insurance coverage.
The affordable care act helped to ensure that more people would have access to health insurance coverage that met certain, government-defined minimum levels of care. They created “marketplaces where people without access to employer-backed insurance can exercise group purchasing power. As for getting sheer numbers of Americans covered with a health insurance plan, it has been remarkably successful. There is one strong caveat. However, it has been found that an “American may have health insurance, yet fail to seek medical care because of the out-of-pocket cost of the deductible(Rieck&Lundin,2021).

Obamacare, commonly known as the Affordable Care Act (ACA), is a comprehensive health care reform program that was passed into law in 2010. Several elements in the law are aimed at enhancing both public and community health. Some of the most important elements of the ACA in relation to community and public health include:
1. Expansion of Medicaid: Medicaid eligibility was widened by the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which is a joint federal-state health insurance program for low-income people. This expansion has boosted access to healthcare.
2. Public Health Initiatives and Prevention: The ACA has provisions to aid in public health and preventative efforts, such as the creation of the Prevention and Public Health Fund. In order to enhance public health and prevent chronic diseases, this fund provides funding to state and municipal governments.
3. Essential health benefits: The Affordable Care Act (ACA) mandates that all health insurance plans cover a list of essential health benefits, including preventative and wellness care, chronic disease management, and mental health and drug abuse treatment.
4. Community Health Centers: The ACA provides financing to promote the development and growth of community health centers, which give underserved populations access to primary and preventive healthcare services.
5. Health Care Workforce: In order to reduce labor shortages and improve access to treatment in underserved areas, the ACA makes provision to increase the number of health care providers, including physicians, nurses, and other health healthcare professionals.
Overall, the ACA has significantly helped in increasing public health awareness and extending access to medical treatments.
Nurses play a critical role in implementing the Affordable Care Act (ACA) by educating patients about their health insurance options, providing preventive care services, coordinating care for patients with complex needs, promoting healthy behaviors, and advocating for policies that support the goals of the ACA. The nurse’s role is crucial in ensuring that patients receive excellent, patient-centered care that is consistent with the objectives of the ACA.
