Students will conduct a family assessment. They may select one of their extended family units, a family in their practicum setting, or nursing practice setting. The family assessment should encompass the following 12 categories: family demographics, physical environment, psychosocial and spiritual environment, family structure and roles, family functions, family values and beliefs, family communication patterns, family decision-making patterns, family problem-solving patterns, family coping patterns, family behavior, and family social and cultural patterns. Students may find Purnell’s cultural wheel with its various domains helpful in evaluating some of the above categories. Once this information is gathered, examine each category in terms of the following three measurements: family strengths and self-care abilities, family stresses and problems, and family resources.
To continue the family assessment process, students will generate a graphic display by creating a genogram, AND either an ecomap or social network support map (see the Assessment of Families PowerPoints for examples).
Students will then record their findings, including describing the social structure of the family and extended family. Discuss the developmental stages achieved by the family. Describe its strengths and any areas identified for improvement. Examine how the family is or is not demonstrating the six characteristics of a healthy family. Identify current evidence-based interventions the community health nurse could use to assist this family in setting mutual goals and enhancing health behaviors.
Six pages is a guideline for paper length. Seventh edition APA format should be followed, with attention to correct grammar, punctuation, etc.
