Summative assessment: Viva presentation
Students will be asked to present a case study of a patient – based on one of four scenarios, which will be randomly assigned. The student should outline the assessment they would conduct of the patient and provide a viva/oral defence of their findings, based on questioning by the panel, which may include:
Establishing the patient’s needs via assessment tools
Articulating your impression as a mental health nurse using appropriate frameworks
Identifying a range of evidence-based and recovery-focused nursing interventions
Establishing and collaborating on a care plan
Models to enhance therapeutic engagement
Question 1
What is the diagnosis and what signs, and symptoms is the patient displaying in order to meet the criteria for diagnosis? We expect you to demonstrate knowledge of aetiology, including biological, psychological and social theories. Consider alternative diagnoses
Question 2
What tools/strategies would you utilise in your assessment of the patiennt
How would you build rapport and engage your patient with in this process
Question 3
What treatment options, including pharmacological and non- pharmacological, could be utilised for this patient diagnosis.
Question 4
Priorities at least 2 specific nursing interventions for care planning, and provide revelant rational for your decision making.
