The aim of this assignment is for you to demonstrate your knowledge of developmental theories and how they apply to child development.
This assignment requires you to observe a child aged 4 years or younger. The child can be from a friendship group or from within your extended family, with the exception of your own child. Observing one’s own child, may at times challenge us to remain impartial, for example when discussing our child’s abilities or when discussing the influences on their development.
A client from your clinical practice is not appropriate, nor is a child with a diagnosed disability.
Given this is an observational activity we would like you to focus on your observation of the child during the allocated time frame, that is, what did you see or notice about the child (rather than what you already know about the child’s abilities) and them analyse your observations. Your focus should be on observing the child and you are not expected to ask the parent/carer questions about the child’s health/development.
Ideally the observation needs to cover a range of activities rather than observing one activity. Choosing a time when the child is interacting with other children/people provides an opportunity to observe many facets of the child’s development. For example, you may choose to attend a social gathering, observe the child over several hours in the family home or a family outing.
Observe the child and record these observations using Appendix 1 (download below).
