1.Please Explain why you are pursuing a nursing career?
My name is Gbe Dorcas Nzoigba, I am a 2nd semester nursing student at St. Paul’s school of nursing in Queens Ny 11375. I currently work as a Pca on 4DSU parttime. I started exactly 11 months ago. I have so far enjoyed this opportunity Northwell has provided me with, I have seen myself grow tremendously interest in medicine/health developed when I took a trip back to the Democratic Republic of Congo for the summer of 2008. I am Congolese-South African. Therefore, the purpose of this trip was to help familiarize me with the Congolese culture. During my stay in Kinshasa, my younger sister contracted malaria. She was very close to death, so I prayed and cried for God to perform some miracle to cure my sister. To me, it seemed like things were not in our hands anymore. The medical costs were expensive, and they did have effective equipment or access to medicine that could spare my sister the pain she endured. Thus, the care physicians in Congo provide to their patients were inadequate, as the recovery times are way longer when compared to recovery time for sick patients in the western world. This experience was what drew my attention towards wanting to make a difference in peoples lives or during hospital stays. In a third world country If you didn’t have a good socioeconomic status, you were not able to get the healthcare you needed. I am very greatful for the health system that I was exposed to when I moved to the united states in 2014. The educational opportunities presenetd to me were endless. I would like to give back to the community. I think that my Diversity sets me apart because I have been exposed to diversity in education and health systems. Adjusting to changes or new environments would not be a problem for me as I have overcome those adaptation challenges in the past. What I have taken from these experiences is to take advantage of every opportunity. Moving across the world helped me realize that each challenge is an opportunity, and if we put too much emphasis on the problem, we might miss the opportunity. I also enjoy meeting new people and engaging in activities. What makes me a unique candidate for this program is that I speak five different languages (English, Afrikaans, Dutch, French, and Lingala). I adapt easily to an inferior environment to make it seem like home.
2. Please explain how a scholarship will help you.?
This scholarship will go entirely towards my tuition total, which is $56 000 for 18months, as I do not qualify for any aid. I currently pick up double shifts every weekend on any unit to ensure that I am able to make payments towards my education. It would be a huge honor to be awarded the Debbie Tascone Nursing Scholarship. I do not qaulify for the tuition reimbursement because my employee position is a 0.5 and therefore I cannot get tuition assistance. This scholarship with help ease my financial obligations with tuition which will allow me to focus on my academic excellence. In my upcoming semester, I will have two clinical rotations running simultaneously which will make picking up shifts a bit of a challenge but I have been mentally preparing for it. This scholarship is also one step closer for me to go back into the community and fulfill my nursing journey.

I have been blessed with the opportunity to work on all majorirty of the units at North shore univeristy hospital. Ive flaoted and picked up horus on all the differnet ICU floors, Med surge but the one thatstuck out to me most was the pallaitive unit that is on 4 tower.
I was able to experince nrusing from a pallative PCA point of veiw, some nights I sat and comforted patients that didn’t want to be alone and some nights I had to be there to make sure that I was letting the nurse know when patients expressed that they were in pain. On the sadder nightsI found myself performing post mortem care.
