This refelection is based on my week at clinical with including theory based literature from the book provided on delegation and problem solving. Below is a description on how my day went in clinical and how and what I did to collect data for my project. I have attached the first weeks refelection so you could see what I am looking for and how it should be written.
Here is a summary of some of the stuff I did
This weeks clinical was getting to be involved in a lot of meetings I was able to attend to a few of many meetings the management team gets together through out the week. This was cool because it showed how they communicated through the hospital in all areas. They had the leaders and director from medical social workers and even their safety’s committee. They talked about risks in the facility and they all came to in an agreement how to facilitate certain issues with patients in the mental hospital. They also talked about staffing issues such as how the nursing supervisors were the only ones with keys to get into where patient belongs were kept. This was implemented because of the amount of lost belongings that were coming up when they were discharged. But with the head safety person there he had informed them that the locks will go back to the original key where everyone will have access to because that’s is where the fire extinguisher is kept and according to his policy he needs to make sure that everyone can get access to it. That talked about cameras being installed but the amount of work and money made me think if this was going to be cost effective in this situation (that is in the book) There were a lot of information that was being discussed and it was awesome to be able to see how they all worked as a team to collaborate into making things safe for the patients and the staff. They all had prior goals and in that meeting I was able to hear them evaluate if there goals were met and it was effective. Which one issue was not so they had to come up with another solution this was all about how the staff were putting things were patients could reach and grab items from the nursing station this was because staff and other patients safety at risk. their first solution was to put tape were items should not be placed and all staff were informed but after being implemented people were removing the tape and items were still being put where patients could still get in the units. There were a lot talked about with delegation and who are responsible for what like their codes in the hospital and how their lead techs need to start leading the codes. This was a great learning opportunity to hear them problem solve hopefully next week I can see if any of these outcomes end up in the right direction.
On to the next meeting which was pretty awesome i had the privilege to sit along side the CEO of the hospital and see how she interacted with her staff. She really impressed me with the amount of knowledge she presented and why she chose leadership. Before the meeting we talked and she asked me how I handled going to school or work when coming home. Her question was related to the fact she feels that all employees need flexibility and she wants to be able to be flexible with hours and having positions where if you have school children or other personal things that yoh need to get done that her facility will be able to accommodate that as we all have lives. I responded with having balance and how sometimes in a stressful environment or to much going on at once in your life it’s hard obtain that. She mentioned balance in the meeting which I thought was cool that she took my thoughts to tell other leadership employees.
As far as my project and collecting data I was able to see how their orientation process is and how much training each staff gets when they are new hires start. I was not able to get number yet but my mentor will be collecting what I need for me when I get back this coming week as we will be going through all the employees files to get the rest of the competencies caught up. Which I thought was convenient as this will be all related to my project. I was able to get approval to make a questionnaire to hand out to staff which will be answered anonymously which we could get further data based on different staffing responses from each of our facilities. All in all it was another successful rotation I wouldn’t change anything. I’m pretty impressed on how much my clinicals have been lining up with what I have been learning so far in class. It’s great to be able to visualize these things happen and how much work and importance it is to keep a running hospital going. The amount that each department has a vile role. I have been learning so much as being an observer and how each manager and person in a leadership role has their own little ways in doing things but they all had the same motivations
