Using the Principles of Community Engagement as outlined below write a 6 page paper about your community project. What is UNDERLINED is my project plan so please incorporate what is underlined.
The paper is about breasfeeding. Plan: Provide new mothers with education about the positive impacts of breastfeeding and breastfeeding tips to those interested ! Goal: Educate new mothers on the positive impact that breastfeeding has on their newborn. To increase mothers’ knowledge of all the benefits of breastfeeding, their skills, to help them view breastfeeding as normal, and help them develop a more positive attitude toward breastfeeding. Breastfeeding for the first time can be intimidating, we want to boost their confidence!
Paper MUST:
I. Demonstrate use of framework
II. Literature review (minimum of 8 appropriate resources) that address the
problem of your choice. Please DO NOT use internet resources; peer reviewed journal articles are acceptable.
III. Development of support for your project. as outlined below
MUST INCORPORATE WHAT IS UNDERLINED BELOW!
1. Be clear about the purposes or goals of the engagement effort and the populations and/or communities you want to engage.
We want to engage in the population of new mothers and soon-to-be mothers and make them more aware of the benefits of breastfeeding for both mom and baby.
2. Become knowledgeable about the community’s culture, economic conditions, social networks, political and power structures, norms and values, demographic trends, history, and experience with efforts by outside groups to engage it in various programs. Learn about the community’s perceptions of those initiating the engagement activities.
We both grew up on Staten Island and we are choosing to take part in this mission here because we are already familiar and knowledgeable with the community and its culture at hand. Initially we are going to post flyers in OBGYN offices to set up an event where we can all come together, such as an initial meet and greet (maybe barnes and noble?) where we can bring together the community of soon to be moms and speak out about our topic. Additionally we have a facebook group that allows participants to share their experiences.
3. Go to the community, establish relationships, build trust, work with the formal and informal leadership, and seek commitment from community organizations and leaders to create processes for mobilizing the community.
We are going to host an initial meet and greet with cookies to bring the new mothers and community members together. Additionally we have a facebook group where everyone can communicate, ask questions, post real time experience and overall just support and motivate one another.
4. Remember and accept that collective self-determination is the responsibility and right of all people in a community. No external entity should assume it can bestow on a community the power to act in its own self-interest.
We both agree with this and want all of our encounters to be inclusive and educational.
5. Partnering with the community is necessary to create change and improve health.
We will partner with local gyn/ob offices and we will post flyers and speak to them about allowing us to speak to their patients about our project.
6. All aspects of community engagement must recognize and respect the diversity of the community. Awareness of the various cultures of a community and other factors affecting diversity must be paramount in planning, designing, and implementing approaches to engaging a community.
We will make the new mothers aware of our project and our virtual meetings that will allow us to educate those interested in breastfeeding.
7. Community engagement can only be sustained by identifying and mobilizing community assets and strengths and by developing the community’s capacity and resources to make decisions and take action.
We will listen to what the moms have to say and base our session on their preferences of what they would like to know about breastfeeding and their past experiences if any.
8. Organizations that wish to engage a community as well as individuals seeking to effect change must be prepared to release control of actions or interventions to the community and be flexible enough to meet its changing needs.
We will be flexible and will adjust the meeting schedule based upon when the members would be available to meet.
9. Community collaboration requires long-term commitment by the engaging organization and its partners.
We will encourage patients to reach out to their insurance to get breast pumps if they are interested in breastfeeding and we will continue to host virtual meetings and educate and encourage breastfeeding.
