Atraumatic care is used to help reduce or minimize physical stressors, help to prevent separating the child and parent, and help in aiding in the support of feelings of control. This type of approach in nursing can help reduce the negative effects being hospitalized may have on children and promote better adaptation to their illness as well as their treatment, also helping with the healing time and length of the hospital stay. It helps strengthen families and provides support for their needs. (The Atraumatic Care Approach, 2023)
One of the biggest ways in being able to provide an atraumatic care environment is by allowing for the parental figure to be present, this allows for the children to be able to cope better as well as having the parent fulfill the psychological needs of their child. Being hospitalized can be traumatic and a huge adaptation for everyone but especially children who don’t have the type of support needed. (Parental presence, 2023)
Another way to help eliminate the stressors of a hospital environment for a child is to help relieve or prevent pain. The buzzy bee system helps in reducing or preventing pain which also helps in preventing anxiety in the child and creating a less stressful environment for the child. Needle pain is one of the highest stressors for children, the buzzy bee system helps by using a small device that vibrates and cools the skin and helps to reduce the pain of a needle. (Efficacy of buzzy system, 2018)
Being able to implement atraumatic care as a pediatric nurse can help provide a better outcome for not only the patient but the parent as well. 2. second discussion will need 150 word minimum reply

Atraumatic care is a type of therapeutic care reducing the impact of physical and psychological hospitalization trauma that can be experienced by children and their parents. When children are hospitalized they tend to experience physical distress such as pain and discomfort from things such as injections to intubations. On top of the physical distress, children also can experience psychological distress such as fear, anxiety, and even anger. Nurses and other healthcare workers need to have mindsets that are focused on the child’s physical condition, development, and emotional needs along with family-centered care that prevents trauma. (Mediani, H. et al 2019).
According to Handayani and Daulima (2020) a close relationship between a child and their family can be a coping mechanism for children in difficult situations like being in a hospital. Having the presence of the parents or family of the child has a positive impact on the child’s psychological needs thus creating a less traumatic experience for the child and the parents or family. A good example of family-centered atraumatic care would be, parents creating distractions by playing video games, calming through speech, and touching or hugging the child while an invasive procedure is being done to reduce the anxiety and fear a child had. (Handayani & Daulima, 2020). Another atraumatic technique that is often used is that of a âbuzzy beeâ. The buzzy bee is a small vibrator with frozen wings that are used for pain control while administering an injection or drawing blood. The buzzy is first placed close to where the injection or draw will be given for about 60 seconds and then moved right next to the injection site and the injection or blood is drawn with the buzzy still working. This method is said to reduce the pain felt by confusing the body’s nerves. (Sayers, 2022)
Overall the use of atraumatic care is essential in making sure the child and parents both feel safe in a hospital setting.
