Abstract: not needed
Title
Introduction:
Introduce the topic area (healthy aging). Discuss briefly the literature on age differences between young and older adults on the cognitive and sensorimotor measures you use in your case report. You will need to focus your Introduction on key aspects of the topic to lead into your study rationale as you will be very limited in space. Introduce your study and provide 1-2 hypotheses for what you expect to find. Integrate your hypotheses with your study rationale, rather than present them in list form. Make sure you give a rationale (i.e., a justification) for your hypotheses (e.g., based on relevant findings in the literature).
Method:
Your Method section should have the following structure: Participants (donât forget their gender and age mean and SD), Materials, Procedure (see the example essay; also see the APA guidelines on what these sections should include. You can find them on google).
Your methods section needs to contain all the relevant details of your study for the reader to know what you did in your study, but needs to be concise. You have very little space to describe your materials so you will need to describe only the important aspects of your methods. For example, âEach participantâs leisurely walking speed was measured for a six meter distance within an eight meter stretch.â Avoid irrelevant information and words, e.g., âparticipants were first asked to stand at a mark on the floor. They were then informed by the experimenter to begin walking when they â¦..â. It is difficult to make the Method section concise, so spend time on it.
Results:
The Results section is more flexible than the Methods section. It is up to you whether you use subsections etc (see the example paper).
A spreadsheet with the data collected by all students will be made available to you.You will use this spreadsheet for analysis.
Always begin your Results section with text (i.e., never with a table of figure). Guide the reader through your results briefly and concisely. Avoid clunky sentences that identify a significant difference and then identify its direction. This waists words. If you include a table or figure, you must refer to it in the text. Include means in the text. Donât expect the reader to have to work out what you mean by looking at a table or figure and assessing it themselves.
You will need to test for significant differences between your young and older adult groups on measures 3, 4, 5, and 6. You will do this by running a t-test for each of your measures comparing young vs older adults (3-6).
Discussion:
Include a very brief summary of your findings if you want, but keep in mind that youâre limited in space and your Discussion is primarily for discussing your findings not summarising them.
You must discuss your findings in the context of the literature you introduced in the Introduction section. Update the literature on the basis of your findings. Only discuss new literature if your findings revealed something surprising that requires additional explanations.
Discuss future directions and end with a conclusion that provides a âtake homeâ message. If you discuss limitations, avoid rubbishing or discrediting your study.
Format
The essay format uses the 1,000 word (excluding References) Research Report style of Psychological Science. You will not need to write an Abstract.
Example paper:
Koutstaal, W. (2003). Older Adults EncodeâBut Do Not Always UseâPerceptual Details Intentional Versus Unintentional Effects of Detail on Memory Judgments. Psychological Science, 14, 189-193.
provides a template. However, you will need to judge how long you think each section of the report should be to ensure that each section is concise but detailed.
Please feel free to ask me any further questions if required. Thank you.
