It’s important to use headphones if at all possible. The sounds may not be accurate enough if you use your computer speakers.
Read through the information on the website until you get to the Identification Task.
For the Identification task (a), listen to the sounds and determine whether each sounds like “ba” or “da”. Indicate what you heard (ba or da) for Trial 1, Trial 2 and Trial 3 of Identification (a) Continuum 1. You don’t need to do Identification (b) Continuum 2.
Then, play the (2) AXB Discrimination Task for Continuum 1 only. Please don’t click on the Results link. There are no results to view and it will just take you to the same information.
Answer these questions:
a) Did any of the 3 sounds, seem different from the others in the set?
b) Did you hear sounds that were in-between “ba” or “da”, or did you hear either “ba” or “da”?
c) Were your results consistent with the idea that some sets of sounds are perceived as the same (even though they are actually different) because they are within the same category, but other pairs of sounds are perceived as being different because they are in separate categories?
d) What aspect of how speech sounds are made does categorical perception help us deal with? Hint: it has to do with how we form sounds within different words.
