Critical Analysis
We know that media plays an important role in communicating a wide variety of sexual
messages and meanings.
This assignment will require you to closely examine some of those
meanings and think about the extent and importance of those messages to sexual
socialization and learning of young people today.
Choose a form of media from the following list:
1. Television
2. Movies
3. Music
4. Advertising
5. Social Media
Engage in critical analysis and discussion of that form of media, evaluating how important
you think it is in the sexual socialization of young people in the US.
If you choose television,
movies, music or advertising, you should engage in some form of historic overview,
comparing examples of that media over time (i.e. songs from the 1960’s, 1980’s, 2000’s and
today) to show the shift or change in the sexual emphasis, degree of explicit content etc. of
that form of media.
You should also closely examine the actual content and comment as to how it contributes to
sexual learning and socialization.
You should include in your presentation examples of the
media you are analyzing.
