For each week, read the chapter and write down any questions that come to mind that would be great for a discussion (write down the page number to include with your post). Good questions often begin with “how” or “why” and are not easily answered by “yes” or “no.” You will make one main post per chapter. For each post, choose a question as the title of your post, provide the chapter and page number(s) that inspired the question, give some background information, relate it to a summary of a scientific research article (be sure to cite and give a reference in APA format), and give your own thoughts or reflections on the topic. You will then reply to at least 2 other students’ questions on the Packback discussion board during that submission period
-Do 180 words for creating questions
-55 words for each student response
Book: Lifespan Development in Context
A Topical Approach
Tara L. Kuther – Western Connecticut State University, USA
Student response 1:
How can you mistreat an innocent child?
Ch.5 pg166 Child Maltreatment is child abuse that can vary from neglect, physical, and sexual. Yearly, there are over 700,000 cases of child maltreatment. Parents are the most common to commit these unlawful acts. Maltreatment toward children is not something that commonly happens once but usually lasts from infancy to adolescence. reading this passage reminds me of Gabriel Fernandez. He was an 8 year old boy that killed by being tortured by his own mother and her boyfriend. Before he was killed he had suffered from months of abuse. He was bound and gagged and made to sleep in a cupboard. His condition had been repeatedly reported by teachers to CPS however he was made to remain in their custody until eventually he was killed by them.
Student response 2:
Ch.5 Pg. 358. How is the leading death in children ages 1 to 4, drowning?
This question occurred to me when reading about childhood injuries in the textbook. I was very surprised as I was unaware to this fact. According to the CDC some people have a higher risk in drowning, “Nearly 80% of people who die from drowning are male”(CDC 2022). This quote displays just one type of person that has a higher risk of drowning, another type are “People with seizure disorders such as epilepsy are at a higher risk of fatal and nonfatal drowning than the general population.”
Now that we have gone over the people who make up drowning deaths, we can go over factors to avoid to make drowning less likely. One of those being, taking swimming lessons as a lot of children and adults report that they don’t know how to swim. Another thing we can do to make drownings less likely is to provide close supervision to children around water. The key thing to take away from this, is to make sure we are all careful around bodies of water.
