Research Report: Written Course Component in Psychology
1*- Introduction AND References (10 minimum that are cited in text), in-text Citations and the Reference section should be 100% consistent according to APA format. This is performed automatically by free Reference Management Software (i.e., Mendeley) that we will be using in lab during the semester.
*Note that the Introduction includes a literature review of two topics (suggestions will be presented) that will be investigated as factors (two IVs) in a 2×2 design, spatial cognition using the water maze paradigm as the DV, learning basic APA style, resources and techniques for searching online databases to find primary journal articles for proper scientific writing. Read, evaluate and organize the research reported in the journal articles, mastering APA style and software reference management using Mendeley. Given the amount of work that goes into the Introduction it is an essential component to the Research Report; without it, there is no basis for the remaining sections. The minimum requirement of 3 Introduction pages and 10 References must be completed before the other sections can be graded. Failure to submit the Intro/Refs Sections will result in a zero for the entire paper. (50 pts.)
2- Methods – including three section 1) Subjects/Participants, 2) Materials/Apparatus and 3) Procedure (Chapter 16 of the textbook provides more detailed information that we will cover in class). The Method is largely based on accepted scientific technique reported in the literature and includes an operational definition of all the variables manipulated or measured in the 2×2 factorial study that you will design. (20 pts.)
3- Results – include three parts, 1) calculation of mean and variance for each condition/group using a SHAM data set (the dependent variable, e.g., Percent Time) that I will provide (there is no time-consuming collection of real data in this class), 2) Using Excel software to graph the descriptive statistics, and 3) inferential statistics calculation of any differences between conditions/groups using SPSS software to analyze the SHAM data with your chosen independent variables (IVs) and given dependent variable (DV). (20 pts.)
4- Final Report – including the Discussion and Abstract
