I WILL TIP !!!
Academic research is important to establish a shared set of facts in the world, which has become increasingly more difficult in this era of rampant misinformation. The peer-review process is the best way to achieve these goals. This assignment will give you the opportunity to get accustomed to locating peer-reviewed academic research and properly citing it in APA format. You’ll be asked to integrate academic research into a few of your Reflection Journals, so this serves as (graded) practice.
1 Utilize the Online Library to locate an academic paper on a topic you’re interested in.
◦ Perhaps you’re curious about the up-to-date findings (within the past few years) on depression and anxiety, autism, effective treatments for disorders, brain functions, neuroscience, etc., and want to learn more; below are the steps you’ll take to locate appropriate articles.
◦ To locate a peer-reviewed academic journal article:
▪ Go to The Delta College Online Library Links to an external site.
▪ Select Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection and sign in to your Los Rios account; this will lead you to Ebscohost, which is where you’ll conduct your search.
▪ You must attach the PDF file of your article with this assignment submission.
2 Properly cite in APA Format
◦ Create a Reference for your article
▪ I have provided numerous APA Format guides in Module 0: Course Resources, but the OWL Purdue is your best friend for APA:
▪ OWL Purdue APA Format
▪ Your article format should be as follows:
▪ Lastname, F. M., & Lastname, F. M. (Year). Title of the article. Title of Periodical, Vol #(Issue), page numbers. DOI #
▪ Example:
▪ Vilhjalmsdottir, A., Bernburg, J. G., Gardarsdottir, R. B., & Sigfusdottir, I. D. (2018). Community income inequality and adolescent emotional problems: A population‐based study. Journal of Community Psychology, 46(6), 715–733. doi:10.1002/jcop.21968
▪ Notice the areas of italics: Journal of Publication and Volume # (nothing else)
▪ If your article has 6+ authors, you will abbreviate using “et al.” (which means “and colleagues”). See this page for “et al.” rules. Links to an external site.
▪ I’ll accept et al. rules from the 6th or 7th edition rules
3 Provide a summary of your article’s important findings
◦ Once you have located your article, answer the following:
▪ What were the researcher’s hypotheses?
▪ What were their findings?
▪ Why are these findings important?
▪ All of these questions are often found in the Abstract, which is a summary of the article. For this assignment, you’re not required to do a thorough examination of the entire article – this is just an introduction to this process – but please read it anyway.
◦ Cite your findings in APA Format
▪ Write a few sentences summarizing the findings you wrote down above and include an in-text citation.

• Please note that this video is designed for my Introduction to Psychology course and some details may be slightly different, but the overall approach and process should still be valuable for you. I don’t think you should be too confused, but if you have questions, please contact me. Links to an external site.
• Please note that this recording has a few small differences/typos (?‍♂️). For example, Do NOT include a comma after your author’s Last Name when using et al. rules.
Deliverables / Common Mistakes / Dos and Don’ts:
• Be sure to make your submission look like the assignment example paper listed above
• Be sure to use sentence case (rather than title case) for article titles Links to an external site.
• Be sure to italicize journal of publication and volume number (this is indicated above, but this is commonly incorrect in student submissions)
• Be sure to use a hanging indent Links to an external site.
for your reference
• APA permits only last names, never first names (this is to avoid gender bias)
• Pay very close attention to punctuation and spacing
• Your paper margins should be 1.0 Links to an external site.
(APA standard), but your line spacing should be 1.5 inches for this class (APA standard is 2.0)
• The only intext citation should be the reference of the article you’re summarizing; including others is indicative that you’ve simply copy/pasted from the research article (there is often a grey tint surrounding the copy/paste reference – remove that)
• Do not include a hyperlink in your DOI Links to an external site.
; use the exact DOI located on your research article, not the generated DOI from EBSCOHost with the Delta/FLC/SCC ez.proxy additions. This is my preference and other instructors may feel differently
• Be sure to use Times New Roman 12pt font throughout your paper; if you copy/paste the citation from EBSCOHost’s generator, be sure to fix your fonts afterward to avoid inconsistency
• Never say “in this article” or include the name of the article’s title in your writing – use only (LastName, Year) or LastName (Year); readers can go to your reference to see the full article title if they want more information
• This assignment should have 2 documents: (1) your reference and summary (as shown above) and (2) a PDF copy of the research article you located via EBSCOHost
