In this paper, you will critically examine a particular social psychological theory or finding within the context of the âreplication crisisâ. Your task is to describe an original finding or theory in social psychology (see list below), to describe whether and to what extent it has been replicated, and to critically examine what went wrong in the original study as well as what is being to done to address these issues in more recent research (e.g., open science practices).
In your essay, you should show that you have read and understood the social psychological theory being discussed. You should go to the original study as well as (at least) two or three subsequent replication attempts and/or critiques.
Your essay should be divided into three sections (plus title page and references), as described below:
i. The Original Study. In the first section of the essay, you should introduce the finding being examined. Describe the original study, its methodology, and key findings and conclusions. This section will be approximately 1-2 double-spaced pages in length.
ii. Replication Attempts. In the second section of the essay, you should describe whether or to what extent the original findings have been replicated in subsequent research. Have the findings held up? Has the original research been critiqued? This section will be approximately 2-3 double-spaced pages in length.
iii. Analysis of the Problem and Reform. In the third section, you should discuss what went wrong in the original study (e.g., p-hacking, sample size, analytical/methodological issues) and what researchers have done to address these problems (e.g., open science practices). This section will be approximately 2-3 double-spaced pages in length.
Finally, at the end of the essay, you should append a reference section that lists the sources of all materials (and only those materials) cited in your essay. Use APA style (7th edition) for formatting your essay and references. All sources MUST be cited.
