What to cover:
Introduction – Brief and concise paragraph outlining your chosen topic, the direction of your paper, include any relevant definitions.
Overview –Describe what research into your chosen topic focuses on/explores/aims to investigate. What is the current understanding around your topic? What is accepted/refuted? Focus on areas you find interesting.
Research – Include early research on your chosen topic. Include recent research on your chosen topic with neuroimaging studies, if relevant. Critique some of the research you cite (consider methodology and read the limitations in discussion section of papers you cite). Search the literature (review articles, recent advances, book chapters, research articles) and present a coherent account of what you learn.
Theory/Models – Compare and contrast two theories or explanatory models of an aspect of your chosen topic (e.g. topic = memory compare and contrast 2 theories of short-term memory)
Implications – consider the implications of the theory/research you have covered for clinical populations/patients/our understanding of the field. You can link this to treatments, advances in the field etc.
Conclusions – Summarize the main points of your paper, conclude with any final statements about future directions of research into your field, what research has not yet addressed adequately.
General guidelines:
– Begin with a simple and concise sentence stating the purpose and direction of your paper, e.g. “The purpose of this paper is to present an overview of X… including X and Y… concluding with X.”… followed by your usual introductory paragraph.
– Conclude your paper with a brief summary paragraph.
– Find one or two good journal articles reviewing aspects of your chosen disorder (systematic reviews/meta-analyses) and use them as your base of information, but don’t just rely entirely these one or two papers!
– No need to cover everything about your chosen topic. There will be a huge amount of research and theory about each topic. Show that you have an understanding of the topic as a whole, but focus on one or two aspects.
– Try to offer some critiques about research methodology and/or theories you include.
