Introduction: Your second assignment for this course is going to be a variation of the two point acuity task.
Purpose: to see in a practical setting the variations of the receptor fields for touch perception.
Materials: Two paper clips
Participants: You will need to locate a partner willing to help you on this project. Please explain the procedure to them ahead of time and make sure they are fully willing to participate and that they can back out at any time.
Procedure: Bend the end of the wire for both paper clips so that the clip forms a point. Have the participant looking away or having their eyes closed during the procedure. You will place the points gently on the participant’s skin on the following areas:
1. Shoulder
2. Forearm
3. Palm
4. Back of hand
5. Back of neck
6. Cheek
For each of these areas randomly place against the skin the point from either one or both of the clips and ask the participant “how many do you feel?” (again please do this gently so as to not hurt the participant).
⢠Switch up randomly whether you are pressing one or two clips against their skin.
⢠Switch up the distance apart the two clips are.
You’ll want to do it several times for each area of the body, randomly switching the number of clips and the distance apart the clips are.
What you are investigating is when you are pressing the two clips against their skin for each part of the body, roughly how close together the clips had to be for the person to indicate they only felt one of the clips instead of two (the times you are only pressing one clip against them is to attempt to keep them from guessing or just “assuming” there were two). Obviously we are not doing any actual measuring so you’ll have to “eyeball” the distances; it will probably just be easier to indicate which areas of the body they had to be closer and which areas did they have to be further apart.
Assignment: Write an essay explaining your results and using information from the lectures and textbook on why you got the results you got.
