The extent to which we are able to make the most of our emotional experiences is determined in part by personal and environmental demands such as our health status, social surroundings, and cultural norms. Indeed, in Stanford psychologist Laura Carstensenâs (1998; Carstensen & Charles, 1998) socioemotional selectivity theory, she posits that our later years (the âgolden yearsâ) may be valuable as we focus less on negative emotions, engage more deeply with the emotional content of our days, and savor the âgood stuffâ in life (e.g., establishing and enhancing relationships). Carstensen reasons that we are able to appreciate these benefits in our advanced years because we come to realize that we have a short amount of time left.
