CASE STUDY:
Not long ago a client (Alan) came in seeking help for drug and alcohol abuse. He is in his mid 30âs
and has been using marijuana, cocaine and methamphetamine since his late teenage years. He
started drinking alcohol before he was a teenager. Alan is a white male, heterosexual male and
has modest economic means.
Alan finished high school and began working in retail. He has changed jobs or was fired every
couple years but was able to work his way up into a manager position. He is married and has three
children. His drinking has a negative impact on his family and occasionally he yells at his wife and
kids. Often he spends time by himself at home watching T.V. or surfing on the Internet.
He isnât very satisfied at work and occasionally gets into arguments with his assistant manager. In
past treatment, it has been evident that Alan used drugs and alcohol to cover up his feelings of
anger, frustration and at times low self-esteem.
Alan also experiences passive suicidal ideation that he describes as âjust wishing things would go
awayâ. He does not seem to have active plans for a suicide attempt, but often makes vague
references to suicide, such as ânot wanting to be here anymoreâ.
