Paper 2 Assignment: Describing Your Person
For this second paper in the class, you are required to revisit the information that you generated for your hypothetical individual in paper 1. Again, please do not write about someone that actually exists—things can get very personal quickly when you do this. It is preferred that you continue using what you already created in the first paper for this section, but you are welcome to adjust/add/remove information if needed to better match what we’re covering in this second paper.
Part 1 – Re-Discussing the specifics of Your Person (2.5 Points): For a second time, provide the background of your person. This should again include their gender identity, age, country/state/city of origin, education, and other basic details that you thought were pertinent.
Part 2 –The Allport Trait Perspective (2.5 Points): Using Gordon Allport’s trait approach, describe how your person’s characteristics would be defined. Please use his concepts of primary traits and secondary dispositions in your discussion.
Part 3 – The Big Five (2.5 Points): After this, you’ll need to examine how this person would be defined/described by a Big Five researcher. Be sure to use the proper terminology and really explain your descriptions in a way that matches this approach to personality.
Part 4 – The Behavioral Model (5 Points): Try to explain where at least 2 of your person’s Big 5 traits came from, using the concepts of either classical or operant conditioning. NOTE: There IS a good way and inaccurate way to apply these concepts. Your grade will be determined on the detail and accuracy of your application of these concepts to a trait.
Part 5 – The Biological Perspective (5 Points): Lastly, try to explain the development of at least 2 of the characteristics you listed in part 2 or 3 through the biological perspective. This description should include information on biological structures and/or genetics—the two big topics we discussed in this section.
Writing Components Requirement (2.5 Points): Final points will be awarded for organization, clarity, and smooth transitions between topics of your paper. Please be sure to really put a lot into this.
General Notes:
The second written portion of the assignment should again be a minimum of 3, typed, double-spaced, pages in length—do not mess with font size and margins to make your paper longer or shorter. You will not lose points for having a paper that is shorter than 3 pages, but if you are fulfilling all the requirements, your paper will be at least 3 full pages.
Make sure that your paper is written as an expository essay. It needs to be coherent, with smooth transitions between topics, and it must be in essay form. You are writing about different topics, but you should not have completely different sections with different headings in the paper. There should also be no bullet points or other forms of separation in the paper that make the paper feel like a list.
Please write several drafts, spell check, proofread, and revise your work before submitting your assignment. You will not receive full credit if your assignment contains multiple grammatical, spelling, or stylistic mistakes. Saint Mary’s offers resources to help refine your writing.
