Motivation is crucial in predicting whether or not an employee will engage in productive or counter productive work behaviors. When considering the scenario related to Dave and his work as an IT computer programmer, there is a theory from the text that certainly resonates. Jex & Britt (2014) mentioned a variety of theories of motivation which varied based on need, cognitive processes, behavioral consequences, intrinsic motivation, and more. In the case of Dave, the self-determination theory (SDT) seems most suitable given the scenario. SDT is defined as a collection of theories that highlight an individual’s need for fulfilling their intrinsic interests and or skills that can promote their self identity (Jex & Britt, 2014). In the prompt, we see that Dave is lacking the same interest in computer programming that he once had before and is missing deadlines as a result. From that information, Dave may no longer have the same intrinsic motivation to complete his tasks related to computer programming.
Jex & Britt (2014) stated that there are three types of needs that need to be satisfied in order for an individual to reach their fullest potential: (1) control over their environment, (2) connection with others, and (3) a general feeling that one is making an impact on the outcomes of their environment. In the case of Dave, his working environment may be holding him back from reaching his potential. Overall, there is a possible plan that could help to change his working environment to help him regain his determination at the workplace. For example, some of his coworkers may not recognize that Dave is missing deadlines or is feeling apathetic towards computer programming. His supervisor may be able to initiate some contact between Dave and his coworkers which may bring Dave’s spirits up and help him to regain his interest in computer programming. In addition to this, his supervisor could create a project that requires collaborative effort from Dave and his coworkers. This action would allow Dave to feel related and connected to his coworkers and the organization while simultaneously pushing him towards meeting that third need of making an impact.
When thinking about the subject of motivation and its application in the workplace, I am reminded of a verse in Psalms. “Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord” (New International Version, 2021, Psalms. 27:14). This verse is applicable in the case of Dave and is certainly applicable to anyone who may be facing difficulties at their job. In due time, God will help us to make it through the storm and in the case of Dave, he would be able to help him reach his potential. There have been moments where I lost motivation in both work and in school and was wondering what the proper course of action may be. My parents and those closest to me reminded me that I need only to put my faith in Jesus and rely on him in the difficult moments.
