Psych Research Project Outline and Rubric
Write an APA formatted, 5-7 pages research paper (including title page and references page)
Use the 7th edition template available on Google Docs. Delete all content for “professional
papers.” Do NOT delete name/instructor, date, institution.
Font/size must be consistent throughout (Calibri, 11 or Times New Roman, 12 are APA
approved). Title and headings are bold. The entire document should be double-spaced.
Minimum 4 references – 2 of which must be from peer-reviewed/scholarly sources published
within the last 5 years. Sources must be cited within the body of the text to be counted as
references. Any exact wording from outside sources must use “quotation marks” to avoid
plagiarism. Paraphrased content should also be cited to not be considered plagiarism.
Structure your paper using the following headings:
Theorist’s Name
Choose a nursing theorist and briefly introduce them/their major accomplishments/contributions
to nursing – everyone must have their own (no repeats)
Name of Theory
Describe the nursing theory they are best known for – include definitions of key terms and
concepts used in the theory. Insert a diagram as a visual reference, if possible.
Theory in Research
Find at least one study published within the last 5 years that utilizes your theory. What were the
findings? Why is this important?
Case Study
Imagine working with a client utilizing the theoretical framework from your paper. Give your
client a first name only and then briefly introduce them as you would in SBAR:
• Example: “Jane is a 17-year-old female presenting to the Emergency Department with a
fractured right humerus. She is tearful and grimacing in pain, which she reports to be
10/10 ‘throbbing/aching.’ Jane appears very anxious and is vague about how the injury
was sustained. During the risk assessment when asked about relational violence, she is
evasive (looking away, dismissing the questions).”
Describe how the nursing theory from your research paper would fit the made-up scenario. List
interventions you would perform and their rationale.
Ø This is a Psych research paper; so there must be socio-emotional benefits to justify using
this theory – BUT your client does not need to carry a psychiatric diagnosis or have a

prolonged mental health disturbance. EVERYONE needs psycho-emotional support at
one time or another ESPECIALLY in healthcare!!
Future Implications
What is the takeaway from your research? Is this theory relevant to nursing today? Why/why
not? What additional research should be done to validate the integration of this theory into
nursing practice. Is your nurse theorist still active? What are they working on now? If they are
deceased, what is the legacy that they left with us? This is your conclusion so try to tie up the
paper and give it a nice ending for the reader.
