Culture and self concept are two separate entities that work in the life of an individual. An article by Brian Haas regarding this topic states, “Cultural context can affect how changes in self-concepts are either valued or tolerated,” (Haas, 2020). This statement means that culture has a play in how one views self and how one perceives their own self as valuable or tolerable. Self concept can be defined as an idea of self-built ideals and beliefs that ones self creates. Culture can be defined as a factor in developing one’s self-identity or self-concept. Culture influences the way that we live daily. Whether it is in our family history, where we live, what we have been accustomed to, or how we were raised, culture has an influence on the way that we look at ourselves and build our own concepts and beliefs to guide us through life. One article states, “Identity is formed through direct relation to the people that we interact with, our physical and temporal environment, and the culture that we are a part of from the beginning,” (Esquivel, et al,. 2021). My culture has affected my self-concept by way of my religion, my home life and my career. I grew up in a very Christian household and the culture of christianity that was built in my home helped built my self-concept in how I pursue life goals such as my career, marriage, and goals. In this type I grew up in people are more collectivistic in some situations than in others.
From a biblical perspective, culture in the Bible is brought up in Romans 12:2 stating, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” This scripture means to think and belong more to a “Kingdom of Heaven” minded culture than a culture that is worldly. A biblical take on self-concept comes from Hebrews 10:35, “Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward.” This scripture can encourage a believer struggling with self-concept and encourage them that their confidence comes from God and their concept of themselves is also from God because He is the one who created them.
