QUESTION
A father and his son are out driving. They are involved in an accident. The father is killed, and the son is in critical condition. The son is rushed to the hospital and prepared for the operation. The doctor comes in, sees the patient, and exclaims, âI canât operate, itâs my son!â How could this be? Elaborate. Provide thoughtful discussion about the topic.
STEP 2
Please respond to below post. 1 paragraph
When I first read this I was confused and immediately said “I thought the father died though.” This is a little story representing gender stereotypes. The father and son had got in a car crash and the father lost his life. The son was rushed to the hospital and we see that his doctor doesn’t want to operate because that’s their child. We automatically assume that’s the father and question how when the father died. Why? Because women can’t be seen as doctors and we didn’t think his mother is the one preparing to operate. The traits that women posses tend to be viewed as less appropriate for high-status positions than the traits presumed to be possessed by men (Baron and Branscombe). Women have been seen to play a certain role and have these traits as warm and supportive. But they are also seen as weak and not capable to have certain jobs like being a doctor. We see these kinds of gender stereotypes a lot in the work field where women find trouble getting a certain job because men are usually the ones to work in that field. Another problem we see in the work field as well is something called a glass ceiling. Women who are rising in the chain of command encounter way more barriers than men, making it more difficult for them to get to the top postilions (Baron and Branscombe). Women aim to get to the top and jump through loops doing so whereas men don’t have too. This glass ceiling not only causes a delay but unexpected challenges.
