The questions below are about certain extended passages in the writings of Freud

The questions below are about certain extended passages in the writings of Freud, Mead, and Cooley. Your answer to each question must likewise be about the specific pages of the course readings which that question is on. DO NOT attempt to answer any question based on information about the theories of Freud, Mead, or Cooley to be found in other sources, such as Internet websites. An answer of that sort will not be given credit.
For each question, you must provide three to four direct quotations from the readings the question is on. Make sure you read the quotation guidelines in the parentheses following each question. You must follow these quotation guidelines exactly. Answer each question, however, largely in your own words. An answer that relies too heavily on direct quotation cannot be given much if any credit. The quotations you provide in an answer must be relatively brief. Further, all quotations MUST be enclosed in quotation marks and accompanied by a brief informal citation in parentheses, including page numbers (for example: James, textbook, p. 38).
You must submit your exam as either a Word document or a PDF file. DO NOT upload your exam as a “write text” submission. The filename of your document MUST contain your first and last name (for example, Jason Woods Midterm.docx).
Question Set 1 is on p. 2 of this assignment and Question set 2 is on p. 3. Carefully read through the questions in each question set before choosing which question set to answer.
1. On pp. 71-73 of the course textbook, Freud outlines what he calls an “ego psychology.” Briefly summarize what you take to be the main points Freud makes on pp. 71-73. What does Freud say about the ego that compares with, or is similar to, what G.H. Mead says about the self on pp. 100-101 of the textbook?
(In your answer, you MUST provide two brief quotations from pp. 71-73 of the textbook and one brief quotation from pp. 100-101. Each quotation MUST contain at least one COMPLETE sentence.)
2. On pp. 83-85 of the course textbook, Freud discusses instinctual drives and the role they play in human psychology and behavior. Summarize what you take to be the main points Freud makes on pp. 83-85. (In your answer, you MUST provide two brief quotations from pp. 83-85 of the textbook and two brief quotations from pp. 38-39. Each quotation MUST contain at least one COMPLETE sentence.)
3. On p. 87 of the course textbook, Freud writes, “the ego…struggles to master its economic task of bringing about harmony among the forces and influences working in and upon it.” Explain what Freud means by this statement while briefly summarizing the main points he makes on pp. 86-89 of the textbook. What is one point that C.H. Cooley makes on pp. 2-3 of the excerpt from Human nature and the Social Order (in Additional Reading on Blackboard) about the self that, in your view, can be related to what Freud says about the ego on pp. 86-89 of the textbook? Explain.
(In your answer, you MUST provide two brief quotations from pp. 86-89 of the textbook and one brief quotation from pp. 2-3 of the excerpt from Cooley’s Human Nature and the Social Order that is on Blackboard. Each quotation MUST contain at least one COMPLETE sentence.)
