The topic must be focused on cognition specifically.
Part 1: Annotated Bibliography
Use Google Scholar for the articles. (4 peer-reviewed journal articles)
These articles must be from 2015 or later.
Each annotation should be 200-400 words.
Focus on
experimental research.
Clearly describe the following in your own words (these subsections should follow the above
reference for each of your entries, and should be labelled “a), b), c), d)”):
• a) The research question/main focus of the article and hypotheses (if appropriate).
• b) Independent variables
• c) Dependent variables
o If a study is not an experiment, describe the key variables as appropriate; please
focus primarily on experiments for this project; contact your instructor if this will
be a problem for your topic.
• d) Results and conclusions (you do not need to discuss the statistics of the article).
Describing variables: Provide a precise description of the tool that was used to measure each
variable (i.e., describe the questionnaire, clinical observation/assessment, behavioural
observation, etc.). Do not only mention abstract constructs. For example: instead of “distracted
driving,” describe the conditions of the distraction (participants had to send 20-word text
messages while driving in a simulator). Be specific.
Multiple Experiments in a Paper: If your selected paper includes multiple experiments, you
may focus on one specifically. Please provide an additional note when papers have more than
one experiment (i.e., let me know).
Important: Be sure to put your responses in your own words. Even though there will be overlap
between your description and that of the authors, you should paraphrase and concisely explain
the key aspects of the paper. Do not include quotations in this assignment. The purpose of the
annotated bibliography is to demonstrate your understanding of the research articles, not
merely move information from their paper to yours.
Part 2: Brief Commentary
Discuss the implications of the work described in your annotated bibliography (1.5-2 page
maximum). The focus of this section is flexible, but it should be tied closely to the articles you
have described in Part 1. What does the research mean for day-to-day life, in some practical
sense, or for the academic field more generally? You may comment on the strengths and
limitations of measurement, and what these mean in a practical sense. You must summarize
this work in no more than one and a half to two (1.5-2) double-spaced pages.
Do not include quotations in this assignment.
Important Tips for Part 2:
• While discussing implications is important, do not be too philosophical. Be sure to tie
your points to evidence. That is, point to specifics in the articles to support your ideas.
• Write for the intelligent but uninformed reader: assume you need to concisely explain
key terms or ideas that the reader may not know (i.e., introduce the reader to key ideas
and explain why they are important). If you have clearly described variables in the
preceding section, you do not have to do it again here.
• Think about the structure of your summary, both at the sentence and paragraph levels.
Be sure to consider how to best present the information.
• You may assume your reader has read and understood your descriptions from Part 1
(i.e., you don’t have to provide thorough explanations of the same idea twice, but you
should provide reminders as necessary – again, think in terms of the intelligent but
uninformed reader who is new to this information).
