Johanna is an 80-year-old female. She is presenting with her adult child. Recently, Johanna experienced a significant decline in cognitive functioning. She is having trouble remembering what she has done during the day. Her adult child is worried about Johannaâs independence. Johanna was found in her home last week with the stove on. She did not remember using the stove. Johanna scored a 13 on the Mini Mental Status Exam (MMSE), demonstrating cognitive impairment. Johannaâs adult child denies any awareness of the existence of cognitive impairment even 3 to 6 months ago. Johanna has not experienced any recent changes in medication. Johanna is treated for hypertension and high cholesterol.
Milton is a 74-year-old male. He is presenting with his wife, Olive. Over the course of the last year and a half, Olive has noticed a slow decline in Miltonâs memory, hygiene practices, and his interactions with their neighbors and children. She notices that he tends to get angry and confused. Milton agrees that his temper is short. He feels confused many times and is frustrated by frequently spotting small bugs flying in his peripheral vision. He gets even more frustrated when Olive or others tell him that they do not see the bugs. Oliveâs concern has been increasing as she has started to notice that Milton appears less steady on his feet. Milton received a score of 11 on the MMSE.
