Worth 135 points
Using all information learned in class, develop an intervention program for an
adolescent challenge (drugs/alcohol, eating disorder, transition from school to work, first
year in college, aging out of foster care, etc.). The only topics you may not use are teen
pregnancy and high school dropout since these were discussed in length for other class
assignments. Remember to discuss the relationship between moral development and
adolescent choices to engage in risk taking behavior. Choose one theory to focus on and
include information from identity formation, gender and/or cultural identity, moral
development, and families/peer groups to validate why your intervention strategy could work
with a specific challenge faced by adolescents.
For this assignment, you are expected to use information from the textbook, from
weekly discussions, from The Search Institute, and from at least three additional sources. At
least two sources must be peer reviewed journal articles (please use sources from your
research project if it is the same topic). Additional sources can include some websites from
credible sources; however, it is not acceptable to use Wikipedia. Please use quotations from
other sources sparingly as it is expected that you will understand the material enough to
summarize it in your own words.
Your paper should be 8-10 pages (double spaced, Times New Roman).
Literature Review (35 points; 2-3 pages)
This section will include information regarding your area of focus. State what the
problem is and the current status of the problem in the United States. For example, if your
focus is dropping out of high school â what are the current statistics on the drop out rate
nationally and in your state, what does it mean to the economy to drop out of high school,
what outcomes do youth have when they drop out of high school, etc. You also need to be
persuasive in your argument that there is a need to prevent the challenge you are focusing on,
so make sure this section is presented in a logical manner and there is enough evidence to
support that your focus is a âproblemâ for adolescents in the United States.
2. Theoretical Orientation (20 points; 1-2 pages)
In this section you need to state what developmental theoretical orientation you will
use as a basis for your intervention strategy (examples might be Piaget, Erikson, Bandura,
Holland, etc.). For example, if you are focusing on career development, you may want to
discuss how adolescents develop a career path as discussed by either Super or Holland or
Ginzberg or Erikson. You must include information from a developmental theory that is
discussed in the textbook.
3. Identity (15 points; 1 page)
In this section, you also want to discuss either gender or cultural identity and how that
will play a part in developing a program that will address the needs of your specific group.
For example, if you are discussing a school based program, how will the culture and/or
ethnicity of the students in your school affect the program you develop. Remember, bring in
information from the textbook to support your statements.
4. Moral Development (15 points; 1 page)
Discuss the stages of moral development (week 4) and how this will contribute to
adolescentsâ risk taking behaviors and the intervention strategy. What are some things you
need to consider as you develop your program? Again, remember to bring in information
from the textbook to support your ideas.
5. Intervention Strategy (40 points; 2-4 pages)
Based on the readings (especially for workshop #8), how would you develop your
program to best meet the needs of the adolescents? Why do you think certain activities
would work and others would not (for example, based on the research, is abstinence
education or comprehensive sex education more effective in pregnancy prevention
programs). Some other things to think about: Would it be beneficial to include parents
and/or peers in the intervention and why? Would the intervention work best as an
afterschool program, in-school program, or as a summer camp and why? Would the program
work better with younger adolescents or older adolescents and why?
This is your opportunity to get creative and to think through ideas that would
ultimately benefit troubled adolescents.
6. Conclusion (10 points; ½ – 1 page)
How would you know if your program was working? What things would you look
for to determine if adolescents were benefiting from certain aspects of your program? How
