Thanks for sharing this difficult situation that is layered with ethical challenges from all angles. If I understand the situation correctly, the woman wanted an abortion, as did the man? If this is the case, the ethical dilemma that the counselor encountered is one of his own and there could be an argument that he used his own beliefs to help guide others to do something other than they may have wanted. I am not taking a side on the abortion debate and one’s rights to their own beliefs, please know this. What I am curious about and, maybe I am misunderstanding the situation, is the ethical dilemma the counselor was in, as he could have referred these individuals to someone else both due to his beliefs and because of the dual-role relationship given the fact that it was his brother who was a part of this. A concept of professional ethics is to understand where there is conflict and to figure out what to do that is in alignment with what the “client” wants, not what one thinks is best for them. Once again, I think this is a great topic to explore and, while not interjecting anyone’s personal beliefs, as a professional one must understand and be aware of how their own beliefs might impact their work with clients. I find this as a key ethical dilemma that one can face because the core ethical dilemma here is what does the client want compared to what a counselor believes and what happens when there is a conflict between whatever beliefs there are and should the professional place their beliefs onto a client, especially when there are other ethical factors to consider, such as dual-role relationships with parties involved. I look forward to reading your paper.
