You will find the need to explain neuroscience concepts to your clients from time to
time. To help you with this process, you will create a visual aid to help explain to a
client the structures and locations in the brain of the main areas that impact mental
and behavioral health. This can be done in any medium you choose (papier mache,
clay, plaster of paris, sketch, painting, photography [if you use othersâ images, you
must a) obtain permission and b) cite your source], puppets, wood-working,
yarnwork, etc.). You will create your model, then write a short paper about what
you did to make it and why you chose that medium. Then at the end of your paper
you will embed photographs of your finished products. Note: These do not have to
be artist quality sculpture, artwork, or images, but it should be a helpful (even
humorous) representation that will help your client understand how brain and mind
function together. Be creative and know it is okay to have a little fun with this!
Your brain should represent, at a minimum:
â¡ The various lobes (temporal, parietal, occipital, prefrontal cortex, cerebellum)
â¡ The hippocampus
â¡ The amygdala
â¡ The corpus callosum
â¡ The cingulate gyrus
â¡ The Brain stem
As a bonus, an illustration of an axon/dendrite/synapse interaction with
neurotransmitters could also be done for a few extra points. Be sure you are clear
on the sources you used to model your creation.
Explanation of this assignment:
This is an opportunity for you to get out of your left brain and into your right brain
for a little while. Choose a representation of the brain that helps you explain it for
yourself and for others (if you would prefer, youdo not have to create anactual
brain, but you can create other objects that represent the functions of the various
parts such as an eyeball for the occipital lobe or a mouth for Broca’s area). Use
your imagination to decide what you would like your visual aid to look like (even if
you think your ideas are beyond your skill level). This project is not about
producing a perfect piece. It is about you learning more about these structures,
where they are, what they do, and, potentially, creating a teaching aid to help you
show a client who is struggling with anxiety or depression or PTSD where that
âmisfireâ is likely to be located in the brain. Choose a medium that you like.
Proficiency is not the concern so much as evidence of a concerted effort to make
something of the quality that you would want to share with a client. (I know not
everyone is an artist/sculptor/photographer, but I want you to try.)
Your Neurocounseling text will be a good starting resource for you as to where
things are, but feel free to consult other sources (like the 3D Brain app, Google
Images, etc.) to find good guides as to where and how to place each part listed
above. As always, if you use a source, you must cite that you have used it in your
references.
Visual:
Choose your medium as described above. Take some time to plan what you
would like to do to represent each part. Decide if you want separate pieces
that fit together or one single solid representation. Then create your piece!
When it is completed, take photos of it from many angles to show the various
represented components.
Paper:
Write up your process of completing this project. At a minimum you should
include the following:
â¡ Explain your idea about how you wanted to represent the brain.
â¡ Explain your choice of medium that you used to create it. Why did you
choose this medium? Have you used this medium before? What
appealed to you about this one versus another possible choice? What
colors did you choose? What made you choose those colors?
â¡ Describe the process of making the visual aid. What part did you do
first? When did you get started? What was easy for you? What was
hard? As you finished each part of it, how did you feel?
â¡ Explain what you have learned about the brain while completing this
project. How did creating this project help you with your
understanding of the brain structures and functions? What did you
learn about the brain that you hadnât heard of before? What did you
find to be the most interesting tidbit of information that you came
away with as you completed it?
â¡ How do you see yourself being able to use this visual aid (or any other
aid you might acquire) to help a client understand their
diagnosis/behavior/emotions.
Donât forget to add your images of your creation at the end of the paper! Just
embed them (insert function in Word) into the paper directly.
As always, your paper should be written clearly, well proofread, and
addresses all of the above criteria. This paper should not exceed 5
written pages.
NOTE: The entirety of this paper does not need to be APA style (cover sheet,
running head, etc.), but if you did consult sources (including your text), then
you will have to include both in-text citations where you talk about what you
learned from each source and a reference list at the end of the paper (after
your photos) in APA style. It would also be very helpful if you include
headings at the beginning of each section of the paper so it is easier for your
reader to know which section of the paper you are discussing there.
